Which Countries May Not Recognize an Online Marriage?
A marriage completed online through our services is legally recognized in the United States, and the resulting U.S. marriage certificate can often be used internationally to establish marital status. However, recognition of marriages performed online can vary by country, and certain governments may have additional requirements for marriages conducted abroad.
For couples with international connections, government officials have previously indicated that a U.S. marriage certificate may not be accepted in certain countries when the marriage ceremony was conducted online. These countries include:
France
Finland
Australia
Hungary
Taiwan
Germany
Portugal
Sweden
Turkmenistan
Norway
Poland*
*Recognition may vary depending on the specific registration office or authority handling the matter.
